This is one of several of my favorite hymns. Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing is a Christian hymn composed by the 18th century Methodist pastor and hymnist Robert Robinson. The hymn is set to an American folk tune known as Nettleton, by attribution to the evangelist Asahel Nettleton who composed it early in the nineteenth century. Robinson penned the words at age 22 in the year 1757. The words of the hymn are in the public domain. My home is a small community called "Zelda" in Lawrence County, Kentucky. Raised in the music rich foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, I have always been exposed to the unique mountain musical culture of family, friends and neighbors. Music is as much a part of my life as falling in love. Members of my family, most of my neighbors, fellow school chums and local gospel groups played, sang and shared their musical talent(s) with all (or anyone) that would listen. The mountain dulcimer is an instrument that stands alone. The majority of these instruments have three or four strings. The first string (or strings in the case of the 4-string instrument) is the melody string(s). The two remaining strings are drones that give the Appalachian dulcimer its particularly beautiful bagpipe sound. What makes the dulcimer so easy to learn and play is its simplicity. The birthplace of the dulcimer is in the hills of Appalachia. These lap instruments were easy to build and easy to play.
